COACHING EXPERIENCE / SPECIALITY / COACHING STRENGTHS
Andy’s coaching experience began as a client, rather than coach. However, he was so impressed with the impact of that relationship; he volunteered to act as an internal coach for five years before making it his full-time occupation in 1997. Since then, he has delivered over 10,000 hours of 1-1 coaching to senior executives in a wide variety of organisations in both the private and public sectors. He has also led numerous team coaching projects, primarily with Executive teams.
Andy is an Executive Business coach, focusing particularly on leadership issues. He feels fortunate in having been specifically trained as a leader in his early career, and is able to draw on his experience in this essential but often overlooked development area. His coaching style is to create an environment where the client can explore every option, and ‘think dangerous thoughts’. He likes to encourage individuals to focus first on opportunities to use their strengths to greater effect, then to look pragmatically at how to deal with the things they don’t do so well. However, each session, no matter the content, should conclude with the client choosing to take some action, which in turn will lead to a further learning opportunity.
Andy’s preference is to work on issues based on leadership effectiveness, relationships generally and communication challenges. However, he believes in a holistic approach, so no subject is off limits in a coaching session - he is willing to tackle any issue his client raises, providing it falls within the limits of his own competency and experience; otherwise, he will help his client find the appropriate assistance elsewhere.
Andy was a career Naval Officer for 22 years in the Royal Navy, training initially in the Supply and Secretariat specialisation. After serving in a number of ships, shore bases and submarines, he was uniquely recommended for submarine command and concluded his naval career with a number of operational roles, including a 3 year appointment to a Tactical Development Unit of the United States Navy. His second career was as an Executive with British Railways during its transition from public entity to a number of private companies. It was from this somewhat turbulent environment that he moved in1997 into full-time coaching, immigrating to South Africa and founding Change Partners, the first coaching company in South Africa.
