Coaching Philosophy and Approach
As an executive coach my focus is on helping others unlock and realise their full potential. My background is ideal for interacting with a wide range of individuals from varied fields and with different life experiences. I use the integral coaching framework with its rich psychological and philosophical roots integrated into a powerfully practical model, which works and resonates for me. The premise of this framework is that an individual is a combination of head, heart and body and one needs to work with the individual as an integrated whole for sustainable growth and development
The coaching process I follow is one of purposeful conversations. We define a purpose of coaching with some desired outcomes against which coaching is continuously evaluated. Self-observations are co-designed to develop self-insight and then using these insights practices are designed to help you create the necessary shifts. At the end of the coaching engagement you are left with a coaching program that is with which you have had practice. This becomes self-generating in that you are left with the skill to self-observe and correct in the moment with the competencies we have been working with.
Previous Background
I spent more than 10 years in the corporate (Anglo American), consulting (Kessel Feinstein Consulting) and retail (Loads of Living) environment where I operated at all levels of management. I was the founder of Risk Management Connection consulting to several Internal Audit Departments (Amplats, Rennies Travel, Anglo American Corporation) on risk management, facilitating risk impact assessments of operational and IT areas. I also fulfilled a project management and marekting role at Loads of Living.
Coaching Work and Experience
I have been coaching for the last five years, primarily to senior and executive managers in the IT, Financial and Retail industries and managing directors of small medium enterprises.
I have also designed and facilitated a number leadership development programs.
I am a GIBS personal development coach for the GIBS Anglo Programme for Management Excellence (2009 and 2010).
I am a faculty member for the Centre for Coaching, UCT Business School serving as POD Mentor in 2008 and 2009 and was invited to sit on the 2008/2009 panel for certification. I am a POD mentor for the ABSA Internal Coach Training programme.
What do some of my clients have to say?
This coaching experience has had a profound effect on me and my leadership skills and I truly believe I am a vastly improved manager as a result. This is undoubtedly due to the combination of Alana’s experience, skill and style. She is thoughtful and empathetic, yet at the same time has a no nonsense approach and pushed me on the issues I was least comfortable with and did not allow me to avoid addressing these issues.
I would highly recommend Alana as a coach and in fact would like to continue working with her myself in the future as I believe there is still a wealth of learning I can gain from her. She is exceptionally well-read and knowledgeable and this combined with her many years of practical experience makes her well qualified to drive a coaching intervention at Executive level.
Charlene Meltz- MD Digital Marketing Services
Alana coached me for a period of about six months in 2009….. Alana created an honest, supportive and encouraging environment that enabled me to relook at many of the things I thought or did and gain different perspectives. Alana has an in depth understanding of the corporate workplace and she is able to help one discover how ones own personality fits into the work environment. Many of the coaching exercises which she gave me have become useful tools both in the workplace and beyond. She has helped me in my relationships with others and most importantly in my relationship with myself. Alana helped me discover and connect with my true ‘voice’ and I am a much more confident and self aware person for it.
